Juvederm

What is Juvederm?

Juvederm is a well-known acid-based dermal filler. In simple terms, it is a filler injection composed of hyaluronic acid, which is injected into the facial tissue. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is found naturally in the muscles and skin. Dermatological surgeons use these injections to reduce wrinkles (moderate to severe) which appear on the face.

The Juvederm family offers a number of products. All such products are known for their effectiveness in reducing different facial signs of aging.  Each product offered by Juvederm is known for its various concentrations and bondings of hydraulic acid. All products aim to target different problems when injected into different depths and areas. Juvederm fillers have a gel-like consistency. They are quite smooth.

Types of Juvederm:

  • Juvederm Voluma XC – It adds volume just below the surface of the skin. It helps in increasing the cheek size.

  • Juvederm XC & Juvederm Vollure XC – It helps in solving problems related to loss of skin elasticity. It works to fill out the wrinkles present around the nose and mouth – which are the smile lines.

Juvederm-Tracing It's Orgin

Several years back, at Columbia University, two medical researchers determined two primary functions of hyaluronic acid. These two functions were related to sustenance of a plump appearance and skin hydration. John Palmer and Karl Meyer, the two men behind this research gave the substance its name. It got its name from combining two Greek words – hyalos and uronic sugar. This was in the year 1934. However, this Hyaluronic acid was used for baking purposes much later in 1940’s.

Till the 1990’s, the medicinal use of the substance wasn’t known us to us. However, it was soon used in wound treatment and for pain relief. In 1996, hyaluronic acid was used for the first time for facial treatment. It was used in Europe.

In the current century, this hyaluronic acid is a main ingredient in many skin treatments. Juvederm, uses this substance through a unique process. In this process a gel is created which can last for a long time, more than a liquid form can last after it is injected. Thus, it offers long lasting results. In the later time, several clinical trials were conducted. These were aimed towards the efficacy and safety of using the product. Finally, in 2006, FDA approved the product. Currently, the product is available in two forms. It is available in its injectable form and ultra plus version which offers additional volume.
